Postcopulatory sexual selection is widely accepted to underlie the extraordinary diversification of sperm morphology. However, why does it favour longer sperm in some taxa but shorter in others? Two recent hypotheses addressing this discrepancy offered contradictory explanations. Under the sperm dilution hypothesis, selection via sperm density in the female reproductive tract favours more but smaller sperm in large, but the reverse in small, species. Conversely, the metabolic constraint hypothesis maintains that ejaculates respond positively to selection in small endothermic animals with high metabolic rates, whereas low metabolic rates constrain their evolution in large species. Here, we resolve this debate by capitalizing on the substantial variation in mammalian body size and reproductive physiology. Evolutionary responses shifted from sperm length to number with increasing mammalian body size, thus supporting the sperm dilution hypothesis. Our findings demonstrate that body-size-mediated trade-offs between sperm size and number can explain the extreme diversification in sperm phenotypes. 相似文献

An earlier field study on the fifteen-spined stickleback (Spinachia
spinachia) showed that frequent malemale interactionsresult in high frequencies of sneaking and egg stealing. Moreover, sneaking behavior was performed not only by males adoptingalternative mating strategies, but also by males with theirown nests. The advantage of sneaking is easily understood,
but it is more difficult to explain the evolutionary benefitof stealing eggs from other males. I investigated whether malessuffering from sneaking adjust their paternal effort in relationto their degree of paternity. I also examined whether femalesprefer males that have more eggs in their nests, as this couldexplain egg stealing. There was no relationship between thedegree of paternity and fanning activity, hatching success,or nest defense. However, the older the eggs become, the morethe males increase their attack rate toward potential egg predators(goldsinny wrasse and shore crabs). Thus, males adjusted theirlevel of defense to the amount of energy and time already investedin the clutch. Females did not prefer males with more eggs intheir nests. On the contrary, females preferred males withreduced clutches over males with enlarged clutches. Therefore, female choice is unlikely to be a driving force behind eggstealing in this species. 相似文献

The ocean pout copulates through direct genital contact for internal fertilization. A complete spawning event consists of copulation, oviposition, and the female displaying parental care by wiping and wrapping herself around the eggs. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Larval rearing densities of Hemipyrellia ligurriens (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in standardized carrion were manipulated in order to investigate changes in life-history parameters in response to larval competition for food.
2. Competition was of the typical scramble type. Survivorship remained high at densities up to 32 larvae g liver-1 but decreased rapidly as larval density increased further.
3. Emergent adults were undersized with reduced fecundity and longevity. Variations in adult body size apparently reduced the effects of competition on larval mortality.
4. Females of dry weight corresponding to only 10.4% of the potential maximum emerged at the highest rearing densities of 128 larvae g liver-1. However, these females had a nearly four-fold increase in reproductive investment (per unit weight) when compared to the largest individuals.
5. The duration of larval development declined when competition was intense (i.e. at high larval densities).
6. The short adult life of H.ligurriens, combined with the unpredictability of larval habitat availability, may reduce the value of long-range dispersal so that females 'do better' by maintaining reproductive investment despite a concomitant decline in dispersal ability. 相似文献

Reproductive success and the energetic cost of parental care in male smallmouth bass 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Direct field measurements of the energetic expenditure on parental care and within-nest reproductive success of individual male smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui were determined by measuring the change in total body mass as well as by total body electroconductivity analysis (TOBEC™). With TOBEC, the change in total body lean mass of the same live individual was measured non-destructively at the beginning and end of the parental care period. Lean mass was the primary source of energy utilized during parental care indicating starvation and potential loss of future reproduction. Individual loss in lean mass was related positively to reproductive success suggesting that the energy expended during parental care does affect individual fitness. 相似文献
